The first and the foremost duty and need of all parents to raise their children has turned to be a dream. Changes in the human behaviour and environment have led to the emergence of various new infectious diseases. Though the advancements in the field of medicine have conquered most of all the old diseases, emergence of new diseases has urged mankind to explore new vaccinations and medicines.  There have been the findings of vaccinations which provide immunity against known and specific diseases; it fails to combat the arrival of new diseases. Whereas Ayurveda the holistic science has provided us more valuable immunity building measures such as Swarnaprashana, Prakara yogas etc.

Prakara yoga (Immuno-modulatory measures) mentioned in Aroyaraksha kalpadruma provides medicines that should be used from early stage itself to enhance the general immunity of children.

The following gives the age wise details of Prakara yogas

Jathamaatra (New Born) – Aapplication of Tripadika rasa (Juice of Desmodim trifolium) with vacha (Acorus calamus) on the head for seven (7) days.

Pakshaateeta (15 days – 1 month) – Oral administration of powder of Panchanga of vilva (Aegle marmelos) with the juice of Amalaki (Gooseberry)

Maasajaata (1 month) – Oral administration of powders of Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Hingu (Ferula foetida) and Vidanga (Embelia ribes) mixed withbrahmi ghritha for 7 days.

Traimaasika (3 month) – Oral administration of powders of Trikatu and sariba (Hemedesmus indicus) mixed butter for 7 days.

Shanmaasika (6 months) – Oral administration of powders of Musali kanda and Trikatu mixed with ghee for 7 days.

Ekaabda (1 Year and later)

1st month – Oral administration of powders of Dhatri (Gooseberry), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) & Vyosha mixed with honey for 7 days.

2nd month – – Oral administration of powders of Dhatri (Gooseberry), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) & Vyosha mixed with honey for 7 days.

3rd month – Oral administration of powders of Dhatri (Gooseberry), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) & Vyosha mixed with sugar and warm water for 7 days.

4th month – Oral administration of powders of Dhatri (Gooseberry), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) & Vyosha mixed with honey for 7 days.

5th month – Oral administration of powders of panchakola mixed with ghee for 7 days.

6th month – Oral administration of powders of jeeraka and pippali mixed with ghee for 7 days.

7th month – Oral administration of powders of vyosha, dadima and dadhi mastu for 7 days.

8th month – Oral administration of powders of pippali moola and kutaja mixed with ghee for 7 days

9th month – Oral administration of powders of vidanga and pippali mixed with honey for 7 days.

10th month – Oral administration of powders of vyosha and jeera mixed with sugar for 7 days.

11th month – Oral administration of powders of vyosha and jeeraka along with cow’s milk for 7 days.

12th month – Oral administration of powders of jeeraka along with cow’s milk for 7 days.

Triabdha (3years and later) – the following medicines are to be given for 7 days in the morning mixed with ghee and sugar.

1st month – guduchi, pippali and vacha

2nd month – vyosha, yastimadhu, vacha, Abhaya and Saindhava

3rd month – vidana, musta, ela, vacha, nagara & pippali

4th month – sariba, vyosha, musta, jeeraka & pippali

5th month – Dadima, vacha, musta, dhanyaka & pippali

6th month – punarnava, brihatimoola Twak, Vacha & Ksheerataru Twak

7th month – mashaparni, mudgaparni, musta, pippali & vacha

8th month – Dronapushpa, musta, vacha & palasha twak

9th month – brahmi, musta, vacha, kutaja & pippali

10th month – malathi pushpa, vacha, jeeraka & kaishik

11th month – jeeraka, citraka, vacha, pippali & shami patra

12th month – musta, trikatu, dadima, amalakitalisapatra, udicyam, citraka, abhaya & vacha

Panchaabda (5 years) – In the mentioned formulations Pushkaramoola is used instead of vacha.

Astaabda (8 Years) – In the above mentioned formulations root of sankha pushpa mixed with ghee & honey is used instead of vacha

Dashaabda (10 years) – Medicated ghee like Vidaryadi, Jeerakadi etc as per the condition should be used 7 days every month.

Dwadashaabda (12 years) – The following medicines should be used for 7 days in the morning, mixing with sugar, ghee and honey.

1st month     – Anantha & Vacha chooranam

2nd month     – Brahmi & Vacha chooranam

3rd month     – Mandooki & Vacha chooranam

4th month     – Shami valka & Vacha chooranam

5th month     – Bhringaraja & Vacha chooranam

6th month     – Amalaki & Vacha chooranam

7th month     – Pippali & Vacha chooranam

8th month     – Vishaala & Vacha chooranam

9th month     – Vajravalli & Vacha chooranam

10th month     – Bakuchi & Vacha chooranam

11th month     – Bhooniniba Twak & Vacha chooranam

12th month     – Sariba & Vacha chooranam

The prime need of the hour is to give children immunity against diseases right from an early stage itself. Many of the medicines mentioned above are carminative, laxative, anthelminthic, memory booster, antispasmodic and nervine stimulants. Proper usage of these formulations definitely improves general immunity and thereby protects the child from various disorders.
