Psoriasis is a most common skin disease that is associated with the functioning of the immune system. This skin condition is often characterised with deep red and scaly patches. It is found to affect 2 to 5% of the general population. Both men and women are at an equal risk of being affecting by this skin disease. It can show in people of all age groups, but the onset of this can be seen in the early stages of adulthood. Though the reach of this disease is found all over the world, there is a lot of misconception and myths associated with this skin condition. Below are debunking a few very common myths.
Myth- It is contagious
Fact-This is a very common myth, but psoriasis is not a contagious skin condition. Since there are a lot of plaques that sometimes even crack and bleed, most people assume that this can spread to ones in contact with them. This is not true as this is mainly caused by the reactions of the immune systems and there is a zero chance of it spreading it to other people.
Myth- It is easy to diagnose
Fact- While many people believe psoriasis is easy to diagnose, in reality that is not the case. Many doctors believe there are hundreds of people suffering from psoriasis who are either not correctly diagnosed or are completely unaware of suffering from psoriasis. Only after repeated tests and proper biopsy, psoriasis can be properly diagnosed.
Myth- Psoriasis is curable.
Fact- Psoriasis is a chronic condition that is also lasts a lifetime. As of now there are no known cures to this health condition. However, psoriasis can be controlled to some extent with proper care along with treatment. Using good medicated creams, lotions, shampoos and constant treatment and photo therapy is found to help in a few cases. Though a few natural remedies that help, there is nothing ground-breaking as far as finding a cure is concerned. But sometimes psoriasis occurs in cycles and gets worse at some parts of the year, or due to a particular set of triggers. Knowing your cycle of psoriasis will help in treating this better.
Myth- Psoriasis is caused due to bad hygienic conditions
Fact- This is completely false. Psoriasis appears on the skin and is a chronic disease caused due to the disorder of the immune system but this is not caused or worsened by lack of proper hygienic. Psoriasis has a tendency to be passed along the genes. Hormonal changes, skin injuries, stress and infections play a major role in triggering a flare of the psoriasis.
Myth- psoriasis is a cosmetic related problem
Fact- Though the symptoms show on the skin, psoriasis is more than just skin deep. This condition causes intense and severe pain and can lead to skin infections too. In a few cases people with psoriasis also develop a condition called as psoriasis arthritis which can lead to the swelling of the joints and can cause stiffness and pain in the joints.
