Oh…. Winter is going to hit! It’s the time of year when most of us begin to feel the winter sickness, dealing with stuffy nose, coughs, and sore throats. But fortunately, there are natural ways to protect you against sore throats and other wintertime illness.
Below mentioned are the simple home-made remedies for sore throat that will help you get started on naturally soothing the ache.
Natural Remedies for Sore Throat:
Gargle With Warm Salt Water:
Salt kills bacteria, which is why it’s used as a preservative treatment for cold and sore throats. Studies show that gargling salt water can help reduce the pain in your throat and fight whatever infection is causing it. In fact, a study in The American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that 40 percent of people who were sick and gargled salt water three times a day saw an improvement in their upper respiratory tract infection. Try this: mix 1 teaspoon of salt with ½-cup of warm water, and gargle for 30 seconds.
Drink Warm Water With Cayenne Can:
You would think cayenne would make your throat hurt even more, but its anti-inflammatory properties have the opposite effect. You can use it in a tea, gargle, or warm water drink. Add 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper to 1 cup of boiling water. Stir in the honey, and wait until the mixture is warm. Make sure to stir it frequently, as the Cayenne tends to settle. If you’re sensitive to spice, reduce the pepper to as little as 1/8 of a teaspoon.
Drink Turmeric Water:
This yellow spice powder is a powerful antioxidant, and scientists think it has the strength to fight many serious diseases. For a sore throat remedy, mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and 1/2 teaspoon of salt into 1 cup of hot water and gargle.
Drink Chamomile Tea:
Chamomile is a natural remedy for sore throats. Its components kill off bacteria, while it works as a natural pain-killer. It also has antispasmodic properties (also it helps the muscles relax) which can help you rest.
Drink Clove Tea:
Add 1 to 3 teaspoons of powdered or ground cloves to water, then mix and gargle. Cloves have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and heal a sore throat.
Drink Tomato Juice:
For temporary relief from sore throats, gargle with a mixture of 1/2 cup tomato juice and 1/2 cup hot water, plus about 10 drops hot pepper sauce. The antioxidant properties of these ingredients may help remedy a sore throat faster.
Foods to Avoid:
Above mentioned are the few homemade natural remedies, you can follow to soothe pain of sore throats. Now let’s discuss “What Foods to Avoid”.
- Avoid eating sour food. Sour eatables can just be bad if not worse to increase your pain and scratchiness in the throat.
- Any food item which you find is difficult to swallow should be avoided. Like some dry fruits, popcorn, dried out cereals etc. these foods further when goes into the throat becomes scratchy and irritates your throat.
- Other foods and drinks to avoid during sore throat are acidic foods like vinegar, alcohol, chilly food, frozen food etc.
These are the few tips to soothe your throat pain as soon as possible. While these home-made treatments can be useful in relieving pain, they can’t cure more serious infections. If you can’t eat or drink anything for longer than two days, it’s better to consult with your physician.
